As far as we are concerned, there are only three feeds you should consider giving to your pet chinchilla. They are Mazuri, made by Purina Mills Inc., Chillets, made by Nutritional Research, and Alice Kline's Diet. All three are very high quality feeds with proven track records of success. We carry Mazuri. It's what we feed our own chinchillas. We may be adding Chillets and Alice Kline's Diet in the future. Whichever of these three feeds you choose, in our opinion, you have made a good decision.
We would advise that you stay away from lower quality feeds such as Kaytee, Brisky and L&M. These are the types of brands usually found in general pet stores. We feel that the quality of these brands is inconsistant and, also, they simply do not provide for a chinchilla's nutritional needs nearly as well as any of the better brands mentioned above. |

Blue Cloud is the probably the most widely used chinchilla bath dust by professional chinchilla ranchers. The reason is that it is the best hardness to clean a chinchilla's fur without damaging it. Primarily available on the west coast, chin ranchers on the east coast often substitute Blue Cloud with other dusts. Fuller's Earth is often used, although it is considered to be too soft and does not clean as well as Blue Cloud. Another Blue Cloud alternative is Blue Sparkle. Blue Sparkle contains silica (hence the "sparkle"). The problem is that silica can cut and damage fur. Both Fuller's Earth and Blue Sparkle are good alternatives to Blue Cloud if you can't afford to ship Blue Cloud. For large ranches, this is an issue. For a pet chinchilla owner, the extra cost of shipping to get Blue Cloud is a minor consideration. As with feeds, we would advise that you stay away from lower quality dusts such as Kaytee, L&M and that ilk. These companies do not specialize in chinchillas much less in making chinchilla dusts. The quality of these products can vary greatly from batch to batch. |
